Frequently ASKED QUESTIONS
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between the masterclass and the Intensive Learning Residency?
Our masterclass is a more intensive learning program (12 days). The Residency is an extended and longer term (21 days) which combines teaching with more self-directed practice so that students are able to independently make the most of their time.
How many students are in one class?
We have around 10 students in one class for both masterclasses and the learning residencies. We want all of the students who visit our masterclasses to gain as much knowledge and learning as possible. To maximize each student’s learning experience and provide more individual attention, we keep the number of students limited to 10.
How much experience do I need to take a class?
For onggi, most students are new to onggi. We don't require prior experience for students to take our classes and all skills will be taught from the beginner level.
For Wheel-Throwing, we focus on the foundational elements of traditional Korean wheel-throwing, broken down into teachable steps. This makes it suitable for both beginners and those with a lot of prior experience. Teacher Kwak caters his teaching to best suit each student’s needs and experience so they can best develop their skills and learn advanced forms.
What if I am a total beginner in clay, is it right fit for me?
Total beginners are welcome. Our courses build skills in traditional Korean ceramic practice, and this involves breaking down the foundational elements of wheel throwing and onggi into teachable steps. This allows both beginners and those more experienced in ceramics to learn and progress in their practice.
Is it essential to throw clockwise like Teacher Kwak?
It is perfectly fine if you choose to throw anti-clockwise or you might choose to experiment with a different direction due to the distinct hand movements of Korean-style throwing. The only important point is to make sure you choose within the first day and then stick to one direction!
