21 DAYS / 1 MEAL PER DAY / ACCOMMODATION ALL INCLUDED* December 14, 2026 - January 04, 2027 Learn the rare art of making onggi, a unique discipline for making large jars and forms. Born out of necessity, onggi jars were developed thousands of years ago on the Korean peninsula and these iconic large jars are still used by Korean people today. This Learning Residency is a rare opportunity to learn first-hand from Teacher Kwak Kyung Tae (with English translation) traditional Korean onggi-making techniques, including: - forming slabs, discs and coils by hand using the taryeom (타렴) and ba-dak (바닥) techniques; - building high walls of clay quickly and evenly through taryeom-jil (타렴질); - surae-jil (수레질) paddling and geun-gae-jil (근게질) throwing with metal blades; - throwing the rim using the jeon-dae (전대) and finishing with traditional (문양) decorations. Over the 21 days, residents will each have an assigned station inside Toroo Studio, with access to unlimited clay for practice, a kick wheel and all necessary tools for making. Teaching will be provided every day, with the exception of the first and second Sunday (December 20th and 27th) when the studio will be closed to allow residents to rest and explore the ceramics village. Each resident will be provided accommodation in Ye's Park within walking distance of the studio. The village is full of ceramic artists and their studios. *Please note: - Check in between 3pm - 5pm on December 14th (plan to arrive at Ye's Park at this time). We will have dinner together following residents’ arrival. - We will provide lunch each day. Toroo Studio's kitchen will be at your disposal during the Residency where you can prepare your breakfast and dinner, or eat out in the village at your own convenience. We will go grocery shopping together following residents’ arrival and the studio will also provide dinner twice a week. We will provide staple groceries as well as coffee, tea and desserts. - Instruction will start on December 15th. Instruction begins each day around 9:30am, giving residents opportunities for one-on-one or small group learning, to be then complemented by residents’ autonomous practice. Lunch will be provided around 1pm. Clean-up each day will be at 5:30pm. - Checkout: 11am January 4th, 2027 Beginners are welcome, however prior experience in ceramics will help you to take full advantage of the independent nature of the residency. Please indicate any dietary restrictions during registration.
