Available spots

November 26 - December 8, 2026 Learn the rare art of the Onggi technique, a method unique in the world for coil building large pots and forms. Born out of necessity, onggi jars were developed in ancient Korea for food fermentation and storage and are still used today. A quintessential example of how form follows function, monumental onggi jars and the efficient techniques used to build them are a living art. This Masterclass is a rare opportunity to learn traditional Korean onggi techniques using traditional wooden tools, including: - forming slabs, discs and coils by hand using the taryeom (타렴) and ba-dak (바닥) techniques; - building high walls of clay quickly and evenly through taryeom-jil (타렴질); - surae-jil (수레질) paddling and geun-gae-jil (근게질) throwing with metal blades; - throwing the rim using the jeon-dae (전대) and finishing with traditional (문양) decorations. There are only a handful of onggi masters left in Korea, and even fewer opportunities to learn from one first-hand with English translation. **Please note: - Check in between 3pm - 5pm on November 26th (plan to arrive at our studio at this time) - Welcome dinner will be provided together with the other students on November 26th evening. - We begin November 27th with breakfast in our studio from 9:00am Instruction begins each day at 9:30am, lunch will be provided around 1pm followed by a short break and again practice and instruction until evening from 2:30pm until 5:30pm. - Our last dinner and party together will be on the evening of December 7th. - Checkout is at 11am on December 8th (plan to leave our studio at this time).
