Summer Onggi Masterclass

12 DAYS / 2 MEALS PER DAY / ACCOMMODATION ALL INCLUDED* June 21–July 3, 2027 Learn the rare art of Korean onggi technique, a method unique in the world for Taryeom (coil) building large pots and forms. Born out of necessity, onggi jars were developed in ancient Korea for food fermentation and storage and are still used today. A quintessential example of how form follows function, onggi jars and the efficient techniques used to build them are a living art. This Masterclass is a rare opportunity to learn traditional Korean onggi techniques using hand-made wooden tools. Students can expect to learn how to: - form slabs, discs, and coils by hand using the taryeom (타렴) and ba-dak (바닥) techniques; - build high walls of clay quickly and evenly through taryeom-jil (타렴질); - paddle and shape through surae-jil (수레질) and geun-gae-jil (근게질); - use the jeon-dae (전대) to shape the rim; - and finish with traditional (문양) decorations. There are only a handful of onggi masters left in Korea, and even fewer opportunities to learn from one first-hand with English translation. *PLEASE NOTE: - Check-in is between 3:00pm–5:00pm on June 21 (plan to arrive at the studio during this time). We will have dinner together in the evening following everyone’s arrival. - Teaching begins June 22 with breakfast in our studio from 9:00am. - Teaching will start each day at 9:30am, with lunch at 1:00pm followed by a short break before resuming practice and instruction from 2:30pm until 5:30pm. - Dinner will be provided each night. Our last dinner and party together will be on the evening of July 2. - Each student will be provided accommodation in Ye's Park within walking distance of the studio. - Checkout is at 11:00am on July 3 (please plan to leave the studio at this time).
