Summer Wheel + Onggi Masterclass
Available spots
15 DAYS / 1 MEAL PER DAY / ACCOMMODATION ALL INCLUDED* June 1–June 16, 2027 This Combo Masterclass is a rare opportunity to learn both traditional Korean Wheel-Throwing techniques and traditional onggi techniques. The class will be 8 days of wheel-throwing class and 5 days of onggi class. Korean wheel-throwing techniques and fundamentals are taught step by step through theory, demonstration, and guided practice. You’ll also learn the rare art of Korean onggi technique, a method unique in the world for Taryeom (coil) building large pots and forms. Born out of necessity, onggi jars were developed in ancient Korea for food fermentation and storage and are still used today. A quintessential example of how form follows function, onggi jars and the efficient techniques used to build them are a living art. Instruction and demonstrations will be given for the group and also catered to each individual student’s goals and abilities—all backgrounds and skill levels are welcome! During the Masterclass we will also take students to the ceramic tool shop, host demos from National Living Treasures, and conduct artist visits. In the end, students can expect to walk away with new skills, great memories, and a few of their own finished pieces as a reminder of their time in Toroo Studio. Teaching will be provided every day with the exception of Thursday, June 10 when the studio will be closed to allow residents to rest and explore the artists and studios in the ceramics village. *PLEASE NOTE: - Check-in time is between 3:00pm–5:00pm on June 1.
